HPV VACCINATIONS

Cervical cancer affects 309 women annually, and 172 of them pass away from the illness. The fifth most common cancer among women in Singapore between the ages of 15 and 44 is cervical cancer, which ranks as the 11th most common cancer overall (Source: Singapore – HPV INFORMATION CENTRE)

• Cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that affects Singapore women.

• There are 2 types of HPV strains: high-risks (such as subtypes 16 and 18) and low risks. (examples are types 6 and 11)

HPV’s RELATION TO CERVICAL CANCER

• Certain HPV types, in particular, can infect the vulva, vagina, or cervix (lower area of the womb).

• Usually, a person’s immune system is strong enough to defend and kill the virus. However, this HPV infection can occasionally persist and cause strange changes to normal cells. Cervical cancer may develop over time because of this abnormality.

HPV VACCINES ARE SUITED FOR:

• Both men and women can benefit from HPV vaccinations. Our HPV 2 vaccines are approved for use and are highly recommended especially for women between the ages of 9 and 26.

• If you are above 26 years old or if you are a male aged 9 and above and wish to receive the HPV vaccination, you are advised to speak to your doctor to find out if it may benefit you.

• The vaccine is most effective in people who have never engaged in sexual activity, though people who are sexually active may still benefit from it.

HPV VACCINES ARE NOT SUITED FOR:

• Individuals who are allergic to yeast, and those who are having moderate or serious acute infections diseases. Consult a doctor to see whether a vaccination is required.

SHOULD YOUNG CHILDREN GET VACCINATED?

• Early vaccination is highly recommended if you want to reduce your risk of HPV infection and cervical cancer.

• Young women in Singapore are strongly encouraged to get immunized beginning at age 9. The National Childhood Immunization Schedule (NCIS) strongly advises these vaccinations.
