PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINATION
Pneumococcal Vaccination Strengthens Your Immune System
The pneumococcal vaccine gives protection against the pneumococcus bacterium, that can cause serious infection of the lungs, brain and blood. The vaccine gets to work by reviving the body’s immune system to create antibodies against the disease. They can then identify and kill off the bacteria subsequently.
There are 2 types of pneumococcal vaccines available: Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13) and Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPSV23). 2 doses of PCV13 are typically given to infants from 4 to 6 months and young children to protect against serious pneumococcal infections.
While the PCV13 and PPSV23 vaccines are given to adults and elderly, aged above 65 years who face greater risks of developing pneumococcal diseases. For instance, those that have weakened immune systems or suffer from chronic health conditions.
